Look for suspended fish
We often get hung up on the fact that most fish hug the bottom of the water column. Although this is true in several instances, there are several occasions when predator fish move away from the bottom to peruse forage fish. If you have ever fished for Lake Trout you know this to be the norm as opposed to the exception. Walleye and Pike will also ‘hang out’ in the middle of nowhere if there is food there. Lakes with a heavy Whitefish and Cisco population roaming the open water are more likely to have this occur. Some of the biggest fish in that lake will be out there chasing the open water forage base. Get after them with crankbaits. Troll various cranks until you contact fish. You will have to use a bit of electronic savvy to pull this off. Look at the depth you are marking fish at. You will need a crankbait that gets you down to that depth. You can also try downriggers and lead core line. This is a good mid summer option. If you do see prey fish ‘boiling’ on the surface they are getting hammered from below.
