Keeping Your Head Above Water

The body of a 38 year old male was recovered early this morning.  He was reported missing last night after he failed to return from a fishing trip on lake X.

We have all seen this in our local news papers every summer all too frequently.  A lot of these drowning could have been prevented by the use of a P.F.D. (personal flotation device).  Who needs a P.F.D.?  Anyone who goes boating runs the risk of falling over board.  A P.F.D. is designed to keep your head above the water and help you remain in the proper position to provide proper breathing.  More than 90% of boating deaths are from drowning, and 80% of those individuals were not wearing a P.F.D.  These findings are based on U.S.A. statistics but I’m sure they wouldn’t differ a lot in Canada.

Hypothermia is another leading killer in boating accidents.  Certain products on the market such as Mustang’s Integrity suits can significantly extend the length of time before hypothermia sets in thus enhancing your chance for survival.

There are many P.F.D.’s on the market today from manufacturers such as Stearns, Mustang and Bouy-O-Bouy to chose from.  All are available in many attractive styles and colors which means they are more likely to be worn. To keep your P.F.D. in good working condition you must routinely inspect it.  Always air dry it before storing for any length of time and check for mildew, leaks, insecure straps and loose seams.  Also prevent contact with oil or geese as these may cause some P.F.D. materials to breakdown and lose buoyancy.

If you have never been in the water with your P.F.D. on I strongly suggest you do so.  If you have the misfortune of having to use it in an emergency situation you’ll know what to expect, not to mention the confidence you’ll gain knowing it will support you.

A little bit of knowledge in P.F.D.’s can pay off huge dividends when your life is at stake!  Be sure you know your own capabilities as a boater and the craft you are operating.  If  you’re a passenger don’t be afraid to ask the operator for the locations of all the safety equipment on board: safety throw lines, whistle, bailing bucket, Etc and what to do in case of an emergency.

We here at The Fishin’ Hole will be glad to give you advice on the proper selection of a P.F.D. to suit your needs, after all we would rather read the headlines: MISSING BOATER FOUND ALIVE!!

Have a Great and safe fishing season!
