North Saskatchewan River - Be River Aware

Despite the lazy look of the North Saskatchewan, the river can be very treacherous if anglers are careless or don’t take simple precautions. For boaters, be very cautious whenever you’re travelling near bridge pilings, water intakes or any other obvious obstructions, as unexpected currents are often associated with these hazards. There are numerous subsurface gravel bars throughout the river, so those using motors must be especially careful.

The North Saskatchewan can be very cold through the early and late portions of the open water season. Anglers are advised to dress appropriately and wear a life jacket, even when fishing from shore. Check the weather forecast before hitting the water, and amend your plans accordingly. Get off the river immediately if you see or expect lightning.
