Rigging Foams and Boxes

Rigging foams spools.

One item that many anglers have started to use over the last few years are rigging foams or rigging boxes. These are designed to hold rigs for multiple nymphs, dry/dropper or multiple dry flies. With the surge in popularity of tippet rings they make a lot of sense and lessen the amount of time spent tying rigs on the water. You simply tie up rigs with the desired flies at the desired spacing onto a piece of tippet material in the way you would normally do on the bank or in the boat. When the time comes you simply unwrap the rig and attach it to your tippet ring or if you prefer blood knot it onto your leader.

I started to use over the Orvis Dropper box a few years back and love it. When I'm fishing in the spring I know that I'm going to lose a few rigs it is a huge time saving to be able to unwrap a new rig, tied up at home, and attach it and keep fishing. There are rigging foam spools that are the same size of a tippet spool that you simply wrap the tippet around and stick the flies into the foam.

The dropper box has a little more capacity have five inserts that fit into a compartmented box designed to hold them. You simply attach the end of your tippet into one the slots on the side, wrap your flies around the bar and then push your flies into the slotted foam. If you fish with multiple flies often give them a try you'll save yourself time and aggravation and spend more time fishing and less rigging.
