Straighten Up and Fish Right

A straight, coil-free line is a key to catching more fish

One of the fundamental skills of angling in general and fly fishing specifically is the ability to deliver your bait, lure or fly on time and on the money.

Accurate, precise casting is paramount to catching fish.

So it’s best to have more than luck on your side when lining up to give it your best shot at a big, bad, rising brown trout.

One of the significant reasons for blowing a chance is the thing that anglers call “line memory”.

Monofilament spin-caster lines and tapered fly leaders are particularly prone to this malady which sees the cast line come out in a series of coils after been stored on a reel or tucked away in a leader wallet for a period of time.

For the spin caster the problem can be easily solved by a quick trip to the tackle shop and have the tech swap out the mono for a braided nylon line.

The braided line retains virtually no memory when stored on a reel.

It also has superior breaking strength compared to its mono counterparts of similar diameter plus improved sensitivity when angling for soft-striking walleye.

Fly anglers can eradicate the kinks by adding a leader straightener to their outfit and working out the coils in preparation for a day on the river.

There are several models available in the shops.

Or, if you can locate one these days, a chunk of old inner tube, stowed in your vest or pack, also works as a wonderful line straightening device.
