One effect of flooding on rivers and streams is that certain areas will get widened and consequently shallower, which leads to warmer water. The preferred water temperature range for trout is between 11-18*C, within this range the trout's metabolism causing them to become more active and feed heavier. Anglers should take advantage of anything that causes the water temperature to be in this temperature range. During the heat of summer mornings and evenings will have the best water temps while in spring and fall mid-day might be when the water warms up, bringing it into the preferred range. Inlet streams can also be a source of cooling water that can affect the steams water temperature. This is not to say that trout won't feed unless the temperature is within the ideal range, just that they are more active and feed more as the temperature heads towards this range. In summer the water temperature will be coolest through the night as the water warms and heads towards ideal the trout will become more active and feed, once the temperature warms and gets above ideal the trout
will become lethargic and stop feeding. As the air temperature starts to drop in the evening, or it clouds over, rains etc. the fish will once again become active and start feeding once again. Carrying a thermometer with you will help you to find the best times and areas to be a more successful angler
