With September upon us it’s time is to hit your favourite trout lakes and get in on some of the hottest fishing of the year. In mid August the backswimmer started to make an appearance at many of our area trout lakes and, over the past couple of weeks the fishing has steadily improved. You can expect to get very little action on the surface in the morning, but trolling deeper with any presentation will pick up fish. Around 11:00 am the trolling action tapers off and a noticeable increase in surface action gets going. Then by 1:00 pm during the heat of the day the backswimmers will be moving and there will be lots of trout on the surface, swirling and slashing at these tasty morsels. The strikes are aggressive and many of the fish are big. This is the time to be chucking backswimmer flies utilizing a twitch – twitch, pause retrieve. Keep the retrieve on the slow side and you will entice a lot of fish to bite.
The great thing about this swimmer action is that all the trout will target them, including the biggest in the lake. My friends and I have already cashed in on some great swimmer action this year with an impressive 58 cm rainbow topping the charts. Get your backswimmer fly on and head to your nearest trout lake. Aggressive hard feeding trout will be there to greet you.
