Go Small and go Natural

I was fishing a small pond, trying like the dickens to catch a trout and having a tough go of it. That’s when I approached my good friend Wyatt, who was fairing much better than I was. I asked what it was that he was doing to get trout to bite his line. He pulled out a micro jig, probably a 1/32 oz jig and tipped it with a small piece of bait, suspended 2 feet under a bobber. He cast the works out and waited. In a few minutes his bobber dipped below the surface and he had another trout on. It was like clockwork.

I was using something similarly small, but it was a fly instead of bait, and for whatever reason, the trout were having little to do with me. I’m not one to question too hard why something works, before I try it. I instead change to what is working, and I’ll try to figure out the rest of the why, while I’m happily catching fish. It turns out that the micro jig with bait was indeed the ticket and I tagged a good number of rainbow trout, much to the glee and approval of my 3 year old daughter, Cedar.

My favourite baits being a small piece of trout worm, a couple maggots, or a small chuck of mealworm.

We came back another day and kept it simple, using a small jig tipped with bait, under a bobber. My favourite baits being a small piece of trout worm, a couple maggots, or a small chuck of mealworm. They all worked equally well. The fish were biting and Cedar was exceptionally happy helping me to catch them. This to me is the embodiment of what makes a great day. By keeping it simple, natural, and small we had a great day afield and I expect if you were to try this, you will too.
