Memories Aren't Made of This

One of the key requirements of successful ice angling is a positive connection between the lure and rod. Not only is it essential to precisely present the bait in the strike zone, which in most situations is as few centimetres off the bottom, but also a key factor in getting a good hook set.

That requires a straight line with a minimum of that aggravating condition anglers called "memory". A looped and coiled line is not an ice fisherman’s friend. Because of the small-diameter drum of most ice-fishing spincaster reels and the effect cold weather conditions have on monofilament, memory can be a constant problem during a day on the ice.

One way of reducing the issue is to pull off a few metres of line and straightening it by stretching prior to heading out. Also reloading the reel with braided line, which is relatively kink-free, is a great way to make the bad memories fade away.
