Quick Tips for Triggering Strikes

Key to successful fishing with surface lures is finding the speed that will trigger a strike. There’s no secret or shortcut, you simply have to vary your speed until a fish takes confirming that you’ve got it right. Warm water fish, like pike and bass, often hit on the pause, so experiment with a stop-and-go retrieve, altering the length of your strip.

Don’t be afraid to try fishing the surface for fish that others swear won’t take a bait up on top. I still recall an evening on the Assiniboine River when we fooled a handful of channel cats into taking big dry flies. They were feeding on huge mayflies locally known as fish flies, and we were able to drift imitations right on top of them. The fights were spectacular.
