The Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening

To snatch success from the jaws of defeat during the mid-summer angling doldrums often requires fishing late into the evening.
Low light conditions can present some problems.

Evening angling presents a special set of problems.

Evening angling presents a special set of problems.

Visibility is always an issue.
A head lamp or a hat with built in LED lights is clearly a valuable addition to an angler’s outfit when it comes to changing the smaller sized flies required for angling at that time of year.
Also for rebuilding fine leaders and undoing the inevitable tangles that occur when you are virtually fishing blind.

Nothing can be more frustrating than trying to thread the eye of a Size 18 dryfly in the gloaming when there’s a river-full of slurping trout before you.
A wading stick is also an added safety factor when moving around in the near-dark in an invisible river with a rocky uneven bottom.

So is a good supply of strong insect repellent to keep the mosquitos and no-see-ums at bay while you try to fool the fish with one of their fake relatives. A good, long sleeved angling shirt, casting gloves and a Buff face shield may even be needed on an overly buggy night.
When angling in wilderness areas also beware that you may not be the only predator on the creek that particular evening.
Stay noisy, attach a bear bell to your pack or vest. Maybe even invest in a canister of bear spray.
