Kids are the future of the sport of fishing so it's important to get them started on the right foot. Here are a few tips to help you make your young anglers first excursions memorable.
- Do not expect too much on the first trip or two, just make sure they enjoy themselves and want to do it again.
- Don't overdo it, make the first few shorter in length and be ready to call it a day when they start getting restless.
- Each child is an individual and will learn at their own pace, some will catch on quickly while others will be a little slower at catching on, be patient.
- Fishing is not just for boys, while thought of as mainly a man's sport more and more women are fishing every year and girls are often just as interested in learning to fish as boys.
- Younger kids will have a short attention span and will not really learn much, make their fishing excursions fun, don't worry about it if they spend more time throwing rocks and catching frogs than actually fishing.
- Don't worry about younger kids actually remembering what they have been taught, just make sure they remember fishing is fun.
- Keep your fishing excursions close to home and have a plan B in the case of weather etc.
When a child shows an interest in fishing get them involved in the purchasing of their equipment, avoid the big box stores and go where the salesperson knows the needs of the young angler. As anglers the future of the sport is in our hands, take the time this summer to expose a young angler or two to the wonderful sport of fishing, they will thank you for it.
