Even though the lake sturgeon of the North and South Saskatchewan river systems is Alberta’s largest game fish, few anglers know much about it. Here are a few myths and realities about this beast of the turbid waters. Because it is a big fish the sturgeon has a big bite. Wrong. Alberta’s sturgeon may grow big enough to burn diesel but their bite is nothing more than a gentle nibble.
This requires a rod with a flexible tip and terminal tackle rigged in a way that allows the angler to feel the take. Dirty, high water makes bad angling conditions. Wrong again. The browner the better when it comes to Alberta sturgeon angling. Turbidity appears to be no problem for sturgeon finding the bait. In fact they seem to like it that way. Sturgeon are static bottom feeders. Another myth.
