It’s in the heart of the season and some of the best fishing to be had is happening. Some of the most enjoyable fishing of the season will be had in shallow water. Most species including walleye, pike and trout will be feeding in shallow water during low light hours at this time of year. If you are willing to set the alarm clock early or don’t mind staying late you should be amply rewarded for your efforts.
Now that the water has warmed, more active presentations can be used. Jigs, spoons and plugs actively retrieved will catch fish. If the water is calm, you can actually see disturbances that give away the presence of feeding fish. When a fish is spotted, it can be stalked and caught, regardless of whether you’re fishing from shore or in a boat.
There is also another situation that will draw fish in shallow water and that’s the presence of waves. A steady wind will push waves into shore, displacing bugs and minnows in the area and generally creating avoc. In these conditions fish will move into the windy shorelines and pick off any bugs or minnows caught in the shoreline turbulence. If you’re there to meet them, expect to catch a bunch.
