If you’re planning to ice-fish this winter, ensure that safety is a primary consideration.
ICE THICKNESS
ICE COLOUR
SAFETY IN NUMBERS
Have fun but be safe on the ice
Be sure to check ice thickness before venturing out. A rule of thumb is you need 6" of ice thickness for walking safely, 8" for snowmobile or ATVs, and 12" to 15" for pick-ups.
ICE COLOUR
Be sure to check the ice for colour, cracks and open water. Clear blue ice is the strongest, opaque ice less so, and grey ice the weakest.
SAFETY IN NUMBERS
Always travel on the ice with a buddy, and never go out on the ice in non-daylight hours. Have a safety plan and rescue gear on hand at all times.
