Rookie Rod Buying Tips

Rookie Rod Buying Tips

Buying that first rod for the beginning angler can come with many complications and pitfalls. The temptation for many – especially among non-angling parents - is to go cheap. This has spawned a number of rod and reel offerings that are more toys than efficient fish catching systems. In high-use fisheries I will often see kids who are desperately trying to kindle their hunter/gather instincts using one of these inadequate and shoddy outfits. I can hardly cast effectively with one of these pathetic imitations. How are they supposed to, and still maintain their interest in the wonderful sport of angling?

Match the rod to the size of the angler

Here are some tips for purchasing that first, memorable fishing rod:

• Buy quality. But quality doesn’t necessarily mean expensive. There are numerous fly, spin and spin casting rods available in an economical price range. Anything featuring a cartoon character is destined to be a disappointment. Avoid them. • Match the reel and line to the rod. A balanced, easy-casting combo is vital to angling success. • Get a rod that works effectively for the fish you are angling for. • Size does matter in purchasing a rod – especially for kids. An 8-foot fly rod to a grade-sixer can feel like a power pole, but a 7-footer becomes a better fit. The same applies to spin-casting gear. • Keep it simple stupid. Any reel set-up that requires advanced dexterity to operate will inevitably lead to backlashes, tangles and torment. The learning curve is steep enough already. Why pile on the pressure. But most of all, relax. You’ve got a lifetime of angling experiences ahead of you. That’s what it’s really all about.
