When it comes to the travelling angler, getting there sometimes is more than half the battle. Especially when it comes to air travel, the nature of our sport provides distractions and challenges. The biggest anxiety on a fishing vacation is that moment when you wave bye-bye to your luggage. This becomes amplified at that point of no return called "oversize luggage" where you are required to send your rod cases. This black hole of air travel has swallowed up the most essential part of my gear on more than enough occasions. Even when the airline agent reassures that the rods will be delivered within 24 hours, the conversation quickly changes when I inform the formerly helpful agent I'll be at a lodge many klicks away from the airport city by the time the lost luggage is tracked down. I've since solved my air terminal angst by purchasing two four-piece travel fly rods in 5 weight and 8 weight. Plus a wheeled duffle with a separate bottom compartment large enough to accommodate the rods, wading boots, waders, vest and the rest of my travelling angler outfit. Problem solved. Well almost. Overweight charges can easily become an issue with a large, economy-sized bag. So it's best to weight your load at home before leaving for the airport.
