Fly Tackle for New Waters

Be particular about your tackle whenever fly-fishing new waters, as success may require adaptability. I always bring two flyrods, one strung with a floating line, the other with a sink-top. Take along streamers in a wide array of colours, along with several choices of topwater fly - only the fish can tell you what they want at any given time. Polarized glasses are a must for spring anglers, as they allow you to see sunning fish; you can cast to them using a spot and stalk approach.

Bring a variety of streamers and topwater flies, you never know what the fish will respond best to.

Long-nosed pliers are valuable for assisting in removing hooks, as are jaw spreaders. You’ll find that barbs aren’t required to keep pike on the line; conversely, barbs can pose a problem in extracting your fly without harming the fish. It’s mandatory to remove your barbs when fishing in Manitoba, but beneficial to do so with pike flies irrespective of where you’re fishing.
