The warm days of March seem to trigger something in lake whitefish. They seem to go nuts and get started on the biggest feed of the year. There are days when I can limit out in minutes as one fish after the other line up and hammer my hook. I think the warmer weather from the Spring sun kicks the food chain up a notch. Whatever the reason, it’s a great time to be a whitefish angler.
It’s known that fish relate to, feed from and generally live near the bottom. There’s the security of the water overhead, there’s the close proximity to food below and often the bottom composition such as a large rock can provide relief from possible current and relief from the sun. There are a lot of things going for such a little talked about place.
Perhaps the most sought after winter fish, the lake whitefish , has it 's own unique appeal due to it 's totally different character. Whites don 't fight like a rainbow, they don 't smack big baits like a pike, they bite in slow motion and rather daintily, if that 's even a word. Delicate most appropriately describes their actions, as well as, their snow white flesh.
June is here and so is the best fishing. We all know about walleye so lets set them on the backburner for a spell and talk about a different, but truly fantastic fishing opportunity.
