The experienced guides at Ena Lake reminded me that what lure you fish is not nearly as important as how you fish it. Throughout the week we used only three or four different lures. What we did change, however, was our trolling speed, depth and pattern.
While you can’t ignore lure selection, at what speed and depth you present it is more important.
We swapped out weights more often than lures, seeking to find the depth that these still-settling lake trout wanted to be in. Whether you’re trolling, casting, jigging or throwing a fly, remember that presentation nearly always trumps lure selection.
